As I showed her Tennent's route on the map and ran my finger along the narrow east-coast road that would take me north, she began to shake her head. 'Although they are letting people up to the north now, I have no idea whether you will be able to travel there via that coastal road. The big checkpoint where you present your military clearance is on the central A9 road that runs through the middle of the Northern Province,' she said, pointing to the thick red line of the main artery, miles inland. 'You will just have to apply for the general military clearance to go to the north and hope they recognise it in the east when you get there. Be careful though,' she said, putting her hand lightly on my arm. 'Nobody really seems to know what is going on in the east and there will be a large military presence. Even if they don't give you any trouble, you will still need to be careful about the landmines. Make sure you travel with someone who knows the area well and, whatever you do, don't leave the main roads.'
